Fred Meyer has been a performer for over 25 years. From playing guitar in a garage band in the 60's he turned to Appalachian music where he discovered the beautiful sounds of the Lap Dulcimer in 1976. This traditional instrument came from the mountains, where it had been hand crafted for generations. Fred quickly mastered the instrument and recorded five albums of mountain dulcimer music. He later bacame interested in the Hurdy-Gurdy. His vielle (it's French name) was built by Olivier Boireaud, in Lyon, France. With gut strings, bowl back and carved figurehead, it is a museum quality work of art. Fred's repertoire ranges from Scottish bagpipe tunes and traditional French vielle pieces, to old-time Appalachian music. From Renaissance to contemporary music, Fred creates a sound unlike any heard before. Also known for his love of unusual instruments, Fred's collection includes a toy telephone that can rip out pipe tunes. Fred has performed all over the world, playing traditional music festivals, Renaissance fairs, school concerts, and on the streets. He is also an annual featured performer at Kentucky Music Weekend. |
